The Neotropics are famous for the enormous diversity of their flora and fauna. To document this abundance of species, the classical and irreplaceable approach is to collect vouchers (dried or pickled specimens) that are deposited in publicly accessible scientific collections (herbaria, insect collections, or other zoological collections).
When color photography became financially affordable, researchers began making photos of their study objects to document plants and animals in their natural condition, before colors and shapes become lost during the preservation process. From 2005 onwards, good digital cameras with sufficient optical resolution conquered the market. With this technical innovation, it became easy to control photographic results even in the field. The Internet has made it possible to share these photographs worldwide, and image databases have become an important tool in identifying plant and animal species through the collaboration of specialists from far afield. The challenge now is to estimate the reliability of the genus or species identification of the pictures presented. The aim of the present website is to help document the fascinating biodiversity of the Neotropics. While it is far from being comprehensive, and covers only certain geographic regions and organismic lineages, it contains images mainly taken in the wild, with exact data on the locations and a high level of reliable identifications. |

El neotrópico es famoso por su enorme diversidad de flora y fauna. Para documentar esta abundancia de especies, el modo clásico e irreemplazable de proceder es colectar comprobantes (especímenes secos o conservados en líquido) que están depositados en colecciones públicas (herbarios, colecciones entomológicas o otras colecciones zoológicas).
Cuando la fotografía de colores se volvió accesible, los científicos empezarón a sacar fotos de sus objetos estudiados para documentar plantas y animales en su ambito natural; antes que los colores y su forma se perdieran en el proceso de preservación. A partir del 2005 la conquista del mercado de cada vez mejores cámaras digitales con mayor resolución óptica lo hice posible controlar los resultados fotográficos en el mismo campo. El internet facilitó el compartir y comparar estas fotos en todo el mundo, y bases de datos con imagenes se han vuelto una herramienta importante para identificar plantas y animales por la colaboración de especialistas a distancia. El desafío ahora es de estimar la seriedad de la identificación del género o de la especie presentada en las fotos. La intención de la presente página web es de ayudar a documentar la fascinante biodiversidad del neotrópico. No se aspira a una total comprensión sino que solo cubre ciertas regiones geográficas y linajes de organismos, contiene fotos especialmente tomadas en la naturaleza con datos exactos de su origen y un alto nivel de identificaciones fidedignas. |
